Working with Russia’s leading low cost carrier, Avianova, Sheremetyevo International Airport has dedicated the airport’s Terminal ‘B’ to Low Cost Carriers (LCC). As a result Avianova, which began operations in 2009, has shifted all of their flights to Sheremetyevo. The new airline created a flurry of international publicity in July when it screened a raunchy television advertisement of bikini-clad flight attendants washing down a plane. The LCC offers flights to 22 destinations inside Russia starting from 250 Rubles (US$ 8.15)  one way before taxes and tariffs. Avianova CEO, Andrew Pyne, stated the Russian LCC has created a “price revolution" in the Russian market after its first year of operations.

Avianova, owned by Alfa Group's A1 investment arm and US-based private equity firm Indigo Partners, has grown quickly since commencing operations in 2009, and stated that it aims to lower fairs to “nothing”, and generate revenue solely through ancillary offerings. Pyne stated the airline had “concrete achievements” over the year, but would not discuss the financial state of the airline.

Avianova operates to 22 destinations across Russia with five Airbus A320s with 180 seats each, from an original two planes. The carrier is targeting 1.2 million passengers by the end of 2010, up from 605,777 in the seven months to July 2010, according to the Russian Federal Air Transportation Agency, which added the airline was the fourth-largest domestic Russian carrier in July 2010 and had an average seat occupancy of 75.3 percent. As a result of the 150,000 passengers in July, Sheremetyevo now plans to service more than 1 million passengers on Avianova.

The company said it became Russia's fourth-largest domestic carrier in July. Eighty percent of all tickets are sold through the company's web site, and 37 percent go for the 250 ruble base price.
