FSB takes upper hand in battle with Kavkaz Jihadists
Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia's Federal Security Service, the FSB, has outlined how special operations and operational military activities in the North Caucasus are winning results. At least 14 militant suspects and two police officers have been killed in three raids in the country’s volatile North Caucasus region.Nine suspects were killed in two separate shootouts with the police in the Kabardino-Balkariya Republic late Friday.Two of those killed were suspected of organizing a bombing in May that killed one man and wounded dozens of others, Russia’s main investigative body said in a statement.
Earthquake prone Kamchatka to start getting piped gas supplies in September
Gazprom president Alexei Miller has said Gazprom is completing construction of the mainline gas pipeline from Sobolevo to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Kamchata region in Northy Eastern Russia. "This is a key component in the work to get the whole region connected", he told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the president's residence in Gorky last week. "The pipeline will come on line in September, in just a few weeks’ time. The first site to be connected will be Steam Power Plant-2," the Gazprom chief said.

Russia considering sale of $1bn stockpile of uncut diamonds
Russia’s government may sell the diamonds it bought last year for $1 billion from ZAO Alrosa, the world’s largest rough diamond producer, Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said. The diamonds were bought on orders of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin a year ago to help Alrosa ride out a steep global decline in demand for gemstones.

This time it is with Zhara (Heat) Magazine which is suing her in a Moscow court for breach of copyright over her display of a photo on her Facebook page.

All Revved Up….Going Nowhere

The Moscow International Motor Show opens today and the auto industry is expected to widely laud the near 50%, year on year, increase in vehicle sales in July and the continuing recovery on the back of the state funded cash-for-clunkers programme. But, while one industry is celebrating recovery, the Deputy Economy Minister had less encouraging news for the broader economy (see below). Yesterday he said that the summer drought will mean higher inflation and a forecast growth rate that is less than half that expected in other so-called BRIC countries.

The Russian electricity industry is one of the largest in the world, providing numerous opportunities for equipment and services suppliers. Following a long period of underinvestment, the Russian power generation industry launched a wide-scale reform in 2003. By 2011, the industry should emerge in a fully liberalised state, offering a number of opportunities for strategic and portfolio investors, equipment manufacturers and service providers. Due to a vast investment programme, the industry aims to upgrade its dilapidating generating assets, as well as its neglected transmission and distribution grid.
