Is this the best restaurant in Moscow?

The Observetoire restaurant, located on the second floor of an elite apartment building, opposite the heavily guarded entrance to the President Hotel off Bolshoy Yakimanka ulitsa, is hard to find. There are no big signs, but if it is your first visit the helpful security guards patrolling the perimeter of the Kopernik building will show you the way. Observatoire operates as a private club and while primarily targeted at residents of Dom Kopernik and their guests, also extends its Club Card to those selected by the management. Once you get into it however, the restaurant is a delight. This is a place for discrete business meetings, romantic assignations or just to enjoy fine dining at what, for Moscow, are moderate prices.

Half way through a delicious meal, respected restaurateur of Moscow, Hong Kong and Texas fame, Michael Bedford, proposes this to be the best meal he has ever been served in Moscow. When Linda Lippner, copy editor of Where Moscow who has been wined and dined in some of the best restaurants in the city, and Pat Szcymyk, the publisher of Oil & Gas Eurasia for the past eight years enthusiastically agree, you have to believe that this could possibly be the best restaurant in Moscow.

When Maxim Tkachev, the millionaire CEO of News Outdoor group walks in with a guest and pauses to say hello, you know your companions are on the right track. An excellent range of starters from Arugula salad with red tuna (650 r) to Foie gras with tamarillo and porto sauce (1200 r); a panoply of main courses including Marinated Rack of Lamb, with caramelized beetroot and mashed potatoes (900 r); Pan-seared guinea hen with yellow turnips and rhubarb (700 r); Roasted Red Mullet with green lentils & passion fruit sauce (750 r); and, the most expensive dish on the menu, Asian-style Turbot with baby potatoes (1600 r) and a confection of desserts such as Wild Berrie sabayon with rose water sorbet (450 r) and Mascarpone soup with chocolate sorbet (450 r) all artistically presented on exquisite porcelain and served with panache add up to a dining experience enjoyed by everyone.

French chef, Michelle Lauga, who has been in Moscow 16 years excels himself here as he did at Uley. Managing partner, Oleg Bardeev, is planning a Gourmet Boutique, Wine Cellar for retail sales and room service for residents of the Kopernik apartments.
