Russia Media Monthly. December 2011 - Everything You Need To Know

Troika Dialogue are introducing a new monthly product that will provide up to date key data and analysis of the media industry, enabling investors to monitor major trends in various segments and companies on a regular basis, and make timely and more informed investment decisions.

> We are often questioned about the internet's position relative to television in Russia in terms of both audience engagement and coverage. In this product, we look at these data on a monthly basis, disclosing the average time users spent per day watching TV and online, and the share of the Russian population that watch TV or go online on a daily basis.

> Advertising spending on terrestrial television is a function of price and inventory, the latter being measured in gross rating points (GRP). Different channels also target different audiences, with ratings estimated as the percentage of people who watched the channel in a designated gender or age group. Hence, in order to compare top 15 terrestrial channels in Russia, we use the audience in the 4+ years demographic, and we separately present the audience share of CTC Media's channels in their target demographics on a monthly basis.

> Market share in search queries is the data set looked at to evaluate Yandex's performance. We thus present monthly market share for the company's search engine and that of its competitors, while also providing data on how its share varies between browsers installed on users' PCs, as this is one of the major distribution means for search engines.

> The other hot topic of discussion is social networking. Mail.ru Group owns two social networks in Russia, as well as a stake in the leading network. Hence, the competitive landscape in social networks is something to be followed, especially in light of expectations that Facebook will become more active in Russia, which is a potential threat to Russian social networks.
