Russian Railways plans to form a major global transit logistics company with a broad spectrum of partners, the state owned rail carrier announced.

The company will seek to attract cargo transshipments and roll out international transportation corridors in Russia, in particular the East-West transport corridor.

Russian Railways will seek to expand container shipments by implementing competitive through rates, forging closer ties with European and Chinese intermodal operators, as well as members of the International Union of Railways.

As the goods turnover between the Asia-Pacific region and Europe rises, Russian Railways expects to see higher volumes of container shipments through countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States once their railroad systems have all the necessary technological, regulatory, legal and tariff solutions in place, the national railroad operator explained. By 2020, Russian Railways is looking to double its container shipments.
