The Ukrainian state railway UZ has signed two separate contracts totaling €1.46 billion for procuring 433 electric freight locomotives on July 20 from Russian and Georgian suppliers. The final contracts are expected to be signed in September 2011, subject to funding approval. Deliveries are scheduled between 2012 and 2016. The new 3 kV electric locomotives will replace the ageing fleet of VL8 engines acquired back during 1953-1967 and part of UZ’s plan to modernise its fleet by 2020.

Transmashholding's Lugansk plant will supply 292 Class 2EL4 locomotives and provide maintenance support throughout their working life. The Bo+Bo+Bo twin engine new locomotives have a rated power of 6MW and can run at speeds of up to 120 Km/h.

The TMH's Lugansk and Novocherkassk plants had produced three prototypes, though Lugansk had traditionally produced diesel units. The agreement emphasises on localization of production and THM said 80 per cent of the components will be manufactured locally.

Georgian manufacturer Elmavalmshenebel will supply the remaining 141 electric locomotives from its Tbilsi plant. The twin motor engines develop 4.6 MW and can run at speeds of 100 Km/h.

UZ has also called for four more batches of tenders.
