Air Arabia last week launched twice-weekly services from its Sharjah (SHJ) base to Koltsovo Airport (SVX) serving the Russian city of Ekaterinburg. This follows the introduction of flights from Sharjah to Moscow’s Domodedovo airport in mid-October. Ekaterinburg is Russia’s fourth-biggest city and the airport (Russia’s fifth busiest) handled 2.7 million passengers last year, and has been growing at around 20% during the first half of 2011.

Last October, fellow Middle Eastern LCC flydubai also started serving Ekaterinburg twice-weekly from its Dubai hub. In August, Air Arabia celebrated carrying its 20 millionth passenger, less than eight years after starting operations. In early October, the airline took delivery of its fourth new Airbus A320 of 2011, bringing to 29 the number of aircraft operated across the airline’s three bases in Egypt, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.
